How to maintain your routine whilst travelling
Whether you’re travelling for work or for leisure, it’s always great to try and keep some movement in! Of course, we’re all for balance and enjoying some downtime whilst you’re on holiday, but, if you are looking to maintain some of your routine, then here are some suggestions for you:
1) Pack your running trainers – the good thing about running is that you don’t need any fancy equipment, just yourself and your shoes. With apps like Strava that can help you to plan a route in an area you might be unfamiliar with, running can be a great way of getting some movement in whilst you’re away.
2) Your body is all the kit you need – following on from this last point, make the most of bodyweight movements! Air squats, push-ups, burpees and lunges are just a few movements that are easy to fit into a hotel room for a quick workout.
3) Resistance bands and skipping rope – bands can add some difficulty to bodyweight workouts and a rope is an easy way to get some cardio in. Both of these travel well too, since they’re light and don’t take up much suitcase space.
4) Time of day matters – when travelling, it’s generally easiest to get your session done early. Whether you have a full working day ahead of you, or just want to spend the rest of the day relaxing on holiday, you don’t want a workout hanging over you. You’re far less likely to feel motivated to train later in the day when you’re tired or relaxed, so ticking it off early allows you to spend the rest of the day doing what you like.
5) Nutrition – control what you can. As mentioned, we always advocate balance, and indulging a bit more than usual is no bad thing on holiday. However, try to stay on top of certain things: travelling can be a very dehydrating experience, as can staying somewhere hotter, so ensure you stay hydrated by packing electrolytes for your stay.
Travelling with protein sachets or protein snacks can also help you to reach your protein target in a convenient way, and if you’re self-catering then try and stock up on healthier snacks where possible, such as yoghurts, nuts and fruit.
